Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module provides an overview of the issues facing managers regarding the continuous management of change within their organisation. The focus of this module is on the creation of an over-arching plan for change management in contrast to a more detailed approach which would be the focus of a project management module. Case studies will be studied during the course of this module in order to learn how organisations use a variety of change techniques to successfully manage change within the organisation. The historical aspects of change management will be investigated as well as the theories surrounding change management. These theories will encompass both the Operational and Psychological aspects related to successful change management within an organisation.

Syllabus:

The Management of Change Process. The nature and importance of change (both minor and paradigm changes), factors forcing change, resistance to change, planned change interventions, models of organisational change to include Lewin and more recent approaches. Key issues associated with successful change programmes. The role of organisational culture in the management of change process.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Recognise the nature and importance of change within organisations - Describe the key theories associated with the management of change within modern organisations and integrate the basic steps in the change process - Develop and implement a broad strategy for introducing change - Analyse organisational culture and its impact upon change within the organisation - Critically evaluate key theories relating to the management of change - Identify elements of organisational culture and make suggestions as to the fit with the change effort - Demonstrate the change process both within the organisation and oneself

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught in a blended format using the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Attendance at all Live sessions is highly recommended. The underlying theories and concepts which will be discussed in this module will be supported by guided readings for example, Journal articles, textbooks, case-studies. The live lecture sessions will focus upon the practical techniques of analysing the need for change, potential resistance to change, and developing a strategic plan for managing the change process. Each week the students will be provided with pre-recorded lectures as well as reading materials which they will be encouraged to study before the live online session. While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques, there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development coupled with the practical application of learning within the workplace. The module will be assessed using Tutor Marked Assignment(s) (TMA).
